TARA REID--MORE SHOE OBSESSED THAN MISS MEGHAN?

From THE DAILY TELEGRAPH this morning:

"Now we like our shoes as much as the next girl but booking an entire hotel room just for accessories? Only Tara Reid could get away with that. The notorious party girl surprised staff at London's Baglioni Hotel when she made the diva-esque request recently - despite the fact that they are used to catering for the whims of stars including Mariah Carey and Paris Hilton. "She booked herself into one of our most expensive suites at around $2,000 a night but then requested a second room too to keep all her shoes," a snoop told the Daily Telegraph. "It was absolutely bizarre. She said she'd collected all these shoes while she'd been travelling around Europe, but quite why she has to house them separately remains a mystery. The irony is that Miss Hilton was also staying but she was no trouble at all."

A TIDBIT FROM KRISTIN DAVIS OF S&TC FAME

when sal asked what her fave fashion accessory was, what do you think kristin said?

"Well the shoes! I have more shoes that will fit in my house, let’s put it that way. And I keep buying them! Its terrible! I can’t stop but its what the show did to me. I can’t help it. And you know how shoes make you feel. I mean they really change how you feel."

hello! a girl after my own heart.

GO FOR IT!

if there's something you've been wanting to do, and you've been waiting for the right time, or the right person or the permission to do it, then cut and paste the following statement from my blog, paste it into a word document, enlarge it into 32 point font and print it out and tack it on to your mirror in your bathroom:

MISS MEGHAN GIVES YOU FULL PERMISSION TO GO AFTER WHAT YOU WANT

see how painless that is?

and if you don't know what it is you want, that i cannot help you with. but questions like "if you could do anything at all everyday, what is it you would like to do?" may head you in the right direction.

RAYRAY HAS A VERY DEEP VOICE

and i think he should be the announcer on my show. what he will announce i do not know. perhaps he will just come on and random intervals and boom something very important onto the periodically and we will all look up as if the voice of God is weighing in on what stilletto to wear. how does that sound rayray?

PAT BENATAR AND ME

this morning i just couldn't resist blasting hit me with your best shot and we belong and of course, fire and ice. who doesn't like a little rousing rock opera to get the bod movin in the morning?

MISS MEGHAN GOES TO LA

i didn't want to leave the mountain yesterday but alas i had to come down the hill and back into real life. i woke up this morning wondering why the breakfast bell didn't go off, then realized i was at home in my temperpedic haven.

off to LA tomorrow to tape a really fun shoe fashion show for tyra banks new talk show! very fun! we pulled a lot of fun stuff and i think it will be a blast. sarah is going to accesorize me thank goodness!

ALSO THIS JUST IN FROM AMY:

paleolithic people in eurasia wore supportive footwear--how do we know this? their leg bones remaine dlarge and strong, but their little toes were much less developed, which means they weren't walking barefoot.

AFTER OUR TALK AND TURKEY DINNER

in the dining hall, Martha Southgate, G.C. Waldrep, and Percival Everett read to another packed house and lots of love. then we headed to the barn and boogied down with the entire staff, faculty and attendees. margo and amy started cutting a rug during abba take a chance on me, thom couldn't stay away from the nirvana "mosh pit", richard and tara and i danced it up to superstition while it rained hard outside. something about this mountain makes me want to smoke cigarettes also. what's that about? then we all headed back to treman where richard, perceval and i chilled with catherine barnett and whole bunch of other fab writers in front of the cozy fire, listening to jazz and eating old potato chips. yes it is true that miss meghan stayed up wayy past her bedtime--4 am! aack.

rayray i got your message--no cell service up here on the mountain. will call u when we head down!

A GREAT TALK

by this guy this morning. after a night of torrential rain it's been sunny and idyllic all day. since i'm on bread loaf time it means doesn't feel like sunday nor any other particular day either, just bread loaf day. but i did read the sunday times on the porch in a rocking chair looking over the sunflowers, stone wall and mountain.

ALSO

amy and i had a fabulous time doing fashion show and tell with her amazing knitted creations. she is getting quite talented in this arena i must say. when pausing to look down at my black and white lace - up cecechin sneakers, amy noted that they seemed like something the child catcher in chitty chitty bang bang would wear and we both fell out laughing.

then vodka and sodas at treman and admiring jill bialosky's baby blue thong diamante kitten heel sandals. starting to question whether i am losing my panache because i am not insisting on wearing stillettos to hike around the fields here at the loaf. but you know i am breaking them out for the dance tonight!! whoohoo!

LAST NIGHT

it was chris castellani and ellen bryant voight in the little theatre reading. there really is no place in the world for a writer to read where the love, appreciation and attention is so off the charts. there is such a real R-E-S-P-E-C-T because every sinlge person in the room has sat down with the blank sheet of paper in fear or excitement or sadness and gone forth to write something in spite of or in celebration of it all.

and ps. ellen bryant voight reminded me about that moment when you hear the poem and your head explodes. oh yeah.

August 20, 2005

AT THE LOAF

arrived this afternoon (after a short time getting lost in brooklyn this AM--you know brooklyn is like a foreign land to miss meghan), michael greeted us as we drove up, it is sunny and gorgeous, a reading is going on in the barn, then amy's talk, then cocktails, then dinner, then bonfire. you know the drill. drinking, talking, poetry, fiction, more drinking, long walks and adironack chairs on sloping lawns, and more talking and drinking and readings and craft classes and receptions and talks and drinking and the dance and talking and drinking. rayray, can you attest to this schedule? pls write in.

it is SO gorgeous up here and secluded and spacious and mountainous (?why can't i spell that right?) . no cell reception just email in the apple cellar which is where i am now. margo and i are bunked in the inn on an all-boy floor, thom is out in the wilderness. yusef was in the bookstore earlier persuing all the amazing books for sale and i was too shy to say hi. why do i get a case of the shys up here?. just talked to james hoch, he's teaching a craft class on feng shui and poetry tomorrow i'm going to, and our failbetter talk is scheduled for tomorrow eve at 5:30 pm, then the dance. can't wait to see everyone and talk and drink and talk. . .

also ed hirsch just sat down next to me and is trying to find google on the computer. he is hilarious. fun to be back in poetryland for a bit. it's been awhile.

READERS WRITE IN ABOUT MISS MEG'S TV SHOW!
KEEP THE FEEDBACK COMING!

"DIVINE MISS M:
Yes, yes I would watch a show (weekly, I presume) about shoes!...As long as there was some attention paid to men's (casual) shoes once in a while (men's work shoes are about as non-descript as a glass of water). I just can't figure out why it hasn't happened yet... XOXOXOXO..."

-----Wayne Brown, Tuskegee, AL

"I think a Miss Meghan show about shoes is a brilliant idea.

It needs to be nationwide so that clueless woman around me in the Midwest can see that there are other options beyond their white sneakers. Sneakers are great for running or walking several miles at the zoo, however when you go to work, even if you wear jeans, there are so many cute options. There are too many women who don’t know shoes and getting to them one foot at a time will take far too long.

Another benefit to having the shoe queen on TV is that we can’t all spend our days keeping up on the latest trends and the next big thing. We need help, once again especially in the Midwest where we seem to be the VERY last to know when it comes to style. Unless you are glued to the style network, surf the web to see the latest lines constantly or subscribe to lots of fashion magazines the next big thing takes a while to trickle over to us.

Besides Miss Meghan is beautiful and eloquent who wouldn’t want to watch her on TV?"

DON'T YOU THINK IT'S TIME FOR A MISS MEGHAN SHOW ABOUT SHOES?

me too. why don't you write in and say why you would watch a show miss meghan hosted about shoes?

THE VELVET SLIPPER

velvert velvet velvet is the word for fall. from sergio rossi's blood red velvet round toe pump (which has already sold out in fall 1 shipments) to bottega veneta's velvet t-strap pumps and knee-high boots with wooden embellished heel, to ysl's gold dipper velvet platform pump, it's all about that shimmery soft texture in deep jewel toned hues.

VELVET TIP: to keep your velvet pumps soft and pretty, spray them before you wear them for the first time, with waterproofing spray. layer the spraying by spraying 3-5 times, waiting an hour or two between sprays. this will repel dirt and sidewalk filth and keep them looking new for much longer!

ALSO

you know i was voted (unanimously) biggest class gossip at mercy high. well now i've been vindicated. gossip is good for you!

DO YOU WANT SOMETHING NO ONE ELSE HAS?

then run, don't walk to ludivine and get yourself one of the only pairs of tsumori chimato boots in nyc. go for the deep orange ones. they are MAJOR!

THE SKLARS ALWAYS CRACKING ME UP

here they weigh in on the men hairy back phenomenon.

SHOW ME LOVE

ye-ah, ye-ah. is it obsessive to listen to the same song like 100 times on a weekend? i'd say it was all sasha's fault for reminding me about robyn. and that song is just so good and BIG and what a giant pop song should be!

IN BETWEEN TORRENTIAL DOWNPOURS YESTERDAY

i hung out with cordila at the river park in our bikinis reading the style section and drinking iced decaf with soy, and got a swim in at carmine street pool. the rest of the day was spent reading girly, and talking to the queen who always gives a good listen when miss meghan needs an ear.

THE ARISTOCRATS, SVSV AND JAY-Z-GOD CONNECTION?

aristocrats is very very funny. my favorite renditions were whoopi's and sarah silverman's (who i am a huge huge fan of, saw her live in the now defunct fez last year and fell out). i also liked bob saget because he looks so sweet and normal-guy that the delivery is just great. i have to say i would have liked to see the women get more play. and where were comics like wendy shanker, jeanene garofolo, alison castillo? i think someone should do an all-girl's night of telling the joke just to see what would come out!

went to the svsv photo shooot today, hung with lots of cool peeps inlcuding kareem who was shooting and david and a whole bunch of his talented friends at his friend bill's loft down on broome, right over one of our very favorite places temperley. svsv has a very cool piece for the ladies, hooded tunic with a kangaroo pocket made of fireproof fabric. hung around long enough to coooooool down then back out into the sweatbox where court and i stood on the corner and she explained what philly hatin' is and told me about the debate, who would win in a battle, god or jay-z? it's a trick question, court says, because jay-z is god.

HEAT ADVISORY

if you are like miss meghan and decided to walk all over soho and the west village today, please go inside and grab about five glasses of water and simultaneously drink them and pour them on your head.

MISS MEGHAN DOESN'T USUALLY READ THESE KINDS OF BOOKS

but wow this one is really woth it. great affirmations (miss meghan loves a good affirmation!) paired with powerful and not overwhelming action steps. when this guy talks about wealth it is obvious he means every kind of abundance, spiritual, relationship, friendship, home, family. and it is kind of hilarious to boot! i think he is very in touch with his inner wingtip.

if you read one non-fiction, change your life book this summer besides the perfect fit, this would be the one.

JIMMY CHOO FIGHTS, NEW YORK FORK AND ROBYN IS HERE

yesterday at the doublesecret jimmy choo sample sale the lines of women at the shoreham waiting for the doors to open were scary. i backed away slowly. there were many of them with a hungry look in their eye, sweating in the midtown sun, clutching their invites. move away from the stiletto starved woman my friend. move away slowly.

also, if you live in new york and you are like me working all the time, you know it is very hard to get yourself yummy healthy delicous organic foods for lunchie. now that has all changed with the advent of new york fork and suyai's superfantastic (to borrow a line from the manolo) cooking. she gets up and cooks it that MORNING so you dont have to! and delivers it right to you! hello delicious slow roasted fennel. hello grilled organic chicken with special herbs she can't tell you what they are but they taste so delicious. hello organic orange slices drizzled in cinnamon and wild honey and sliced almonds!

also, you may want to check out the new CD from robyn the swedish pop singer i was obsessed with when i was 23. i hear its maJOR!

OH MY GOODNESS

this british shoe designer has taken the meaning of spiky stiletto to a new and literal meaning. while we know the stiletto could be dangerous he has added an extra component to the back of the heel for extra weaponry. watch out!

DID I MENTION I LOVE THIS?

QUESTION FOR MISS MEGHAN

" Miss Meghan, I am seeking your advice on one of your most famed and loved topics--shoes. I was wondering how seasonal my favorite, fun, flowery shoes are and when I would be wearing them past their seasonal glory?

They are a pair of slingback, Enzo Angiolini, with a flowery print in shades of pink and cream on a black cloth material. There is also a black patent leather trim around the edge and the same patent leather is used for the sling back and there is a little black patent leather bow on the front.

My question to you and the debate around the office is, when must I stop wearing them? Can I wear them past Labor Day? There is a cream color on the shoe, but they are close-toed. I could see wearing them through Sept. maybe, but never into Oct. How and when do you know when shoes are out of season when they are close-toed?Thank you for your help in this matter. It is a reoccurring topic of discussion around the office every few weeks when I wear them. I would not want to be the fashion faux-pas around the office."

--Christina, Washington, DC

Well Christina, first of all I am so happy to hear that someone in DC is wearing what sounds like an extremely fun pair of shoes! You are quite cutting edge and I applaud you for stepping out and taking DC fashion up a notch.

As to the question of when. Since they are a closed toe slingback I would say these shoes are very appropriate weel into the Fall through October. Even with a jewel tone solid color tight that picks up one of the colors in the print would also be cute. Because they have a cream background does not neccessarily mean hey must be retired after Labor Day. I would say save pure white summery style shoes for that category (although there are some who like to wear a white patent leather pump with a black tight in the Fall too which could be a cute graphic look). Mostly if you are comfortable and confident in what you are wearing you will emit that it is the perfect look for that day so I say to you, wear them with panache and you come across as the belle of the ball!

SO MUCH TO TELL!

well saturday brought a lovely meal at sensai at the bellagio with rodney from fashion laboratory--they were the first to bring etro shoes to the U.S. and thank goodness they did! they also represent missoni. betcha didn't know missoni had a shoe line didja? now you do!

we had divine tuna tartare three ways and then played the $5 slots which was th eonly gabling I did all weekend. rodney helpfully pointed out that even though the $5 slots got you three credits (i.e. three chances to pull the slot machine lever) the $1 slots were a better value at 1 to 1 ratio.

PURE

is the new line from dkny debuting in spring 06. co-designed by the clark brothers. fabulous luxury suedes with the softest hand, rubber two-part soles, really gorgeous architectural styling. perfect for yoga class hanging at the beach or just being shabby chic.

MINK

doesn't use mink. or leather or any animal products at all. just goo old fashioned materials like canvas, velvet, titanium and wood. thay have fabulous shoe boxes whih double as shoe drawers and give away naughty aprons with every pair! also they name their shoes after animals like cock, beaver and. well those were the two that stood out in my mind when rebecca was showing me the line. i think there are more like rooster and pig too. hm.

JUST CONFIRMED

that men do indeed wear their sneakers to impress women. and who did i confirm this with? the all-male panel of Dao-yi Chow from Sean John, Steve Sifling from New Balance, David Nichols from KSWISS, and Marc Laidler from 310 Motoring, and Eric Rutberg from Titan. Also, I confirmed that they need to make high performance running shoes for girls in cute colors. (They weren't aware of this, but now they are).

BRUNO MAGLI

raided their archives and is doing a spring line of all their styles from 40s, 50s and 60s, fabulous heels, the capri sandal favored by jackie o,and fabulous square toed mid heels.

ALSO

have you seen this show? love it!

I DON'T KNOW IF I TOLD YOU

about the delicious satin bow shoe clips i saw at eileen shields. they are simply sumptuous. fabulous waterstained silk bows with a perfect clip. i tried to convince them to sell them separately so we could all have a pair for the fall.

August 5, 2005

SPRING TRENDS

slippers. the more the merrier. one can never have too many slips to pad around the house on saturday afternoons can they?

wedge heel: stronger than ever. in every kind of iteration: cork, rubber overed with leather (easy on the feet!), embossed and embellished, curvy shapes.

layers and layers and layers: linen and suede, leather with stencils and metallics, embroidery, grosgrain ribbons.

LAS VEGAS IS A VORTEX

which has me in it's clutches. from the moment i wake up and spin into the venetian to closing my curtains on the strip before i lay my head to sleep. missmeghan thought she'd be posting every moment of the day but the truth is, she got caught on row 5100 of the venetian suites where the hottest shoe designers are now residing: due farina, beatrix ong, eileen sheilds, loeffler randall, etro, missoni, kat chouteau, nancy nancy, kristen lee, satine and all their lines, manuela morin, leflesh, jour& nuit, elizabeth bartlett, maloles, olivia morris. and keep in mind my pretties this is only one hall of five floors with three halls each! i haven't even made it to the main convention center! miss meghan is in shoe heaven but her dogs are barking!

WOW

is pretty much all i can say. stevie wonder rocked it out during his 3 hour show last night. including a 20 minute rendition of superstition where he riffed it up on the keyboards, his coordination of some 10,000 plus audience members singing an old blues song, complete with men and women call and response, you are the sunshine of my life which had everyone sobbing and well.

he also suggested that shoemakers implement braille on their shoes so blind people would not have to wake up their spouse in the middle of the night to ask the color of their shoes should they want to go out. should one have to go out in the midle of the night.

August 4, 2005

AND I GET TO GO SEE STEVIE WONDER TONIGHT, HOW F-ING COOL IS THAT?

see grandma, i didn't swear.

ASHLEY, CARMEN, MINX, AND ANYI LU, OH AND SERGIO ROSSI. HELLO.

so girls rule that's true, ash with her fabulous spring of colorful suedes with metallic cutout insets, and introducing a new thicker heel that will not twist, crack or get caught in subway cracks, carmen is showing a FIERCE collection of subdued details like gold washed linen, and implmenting lots of yummy comfort details like putting the heel in the exact right spot under the ball of the foot for maximum hours on 100mm, anyi built in dancer's details like staccheto construction and fabulous heels, minx from new zealand showing the paula shell from new zaeland waters on some fabulous thong sandals. and then there is sergio. blending african and brazilian prints, luxe gold leather studded with rhinestones, orange crystal platform wedges, groagrain ribbon ballet flats and five styles in tortoise shell. i am practically shoe ful. can that be possible?

SO I GOT LOST IN A CASINO

doesn't everyone at least once in their life? i am now safely ensconced in the press center at WSA where there are no slot machines unlike the airport gate, the bathroom, the lobby, the lobby and did i mention the lobby? also starbucks is more expensive here that in NY! i topped 5$ for a soy decaf iced latte! okay you know the only reason i go to starbucks is because they have the tasty soy milk not the plain hippie kind. and they always have it! not because i am down with starbucks plan to take over the world.

am going to many style talks this week and i cant wait. donald pliner, richard tyler--oooh dont you just love his creations--and a street scene footwear talk with vibe mag.

ok. also i am so glad the internal debate i had earlier about whether to wear my ballet flat callistes or my 3 in chie miharas ended in favor of the flats. since i have walked about 4 hotel miles so far. hotel mile is carpeted and air conditioned, a bit different than an actual mile, but still.

LAS VEGAS IS LIKE A CREAM PUFF SUNDAE

warm and crispy toasty on the outside and chilly on the inside. also, the people are quite sweet.

SOME PEOPLE HAVE QUESTIONED MY TIP FOR GREEN SHOES FOR MEN FOR FALL

to you i say, check out the tretorn site, mens collection, the deep green suede gullwing.

August 2, 2005

SHOE IT UP!

some fun tips for fall. ladies: the colors you want to get into for fall shoes are deep plums and hunter greens. anything sueded textured, crocheted, knitted, distressed. the flat boot you will want more than one pair. the scrunched mid calf boot with saucy heel you will want one pair in a neutral color. the fyre boot? it's up to you. daisy duke has been making them stage a comeback, but do you really want to look like everyone else? don't know just yet but frye could become new UGG. tread carefully.

men: try a different kind of sneaker. the category is exploding right now and everyone from tretorn to nikeID build your own sneakes, to jbclassics is showing something tres cool. mix it up and take a chance with a hunter green suede track shoe or a multicolored designer trainer and see what happens!
